Overcoming Barriers to Medicare Coverage of Skilled Nursing Facility Care

Medicare pays for more residents in nursing homes than ever before, and advocates working with residents need to know how the Medicare program operates as well as the barriers that exist to the coverage authorized by federal law.

In March 2010, Consumer Voice co-hosted a webinar will the Center for Medicare Advocacy that provided an explanation of basic principles of Medicare coverage for care in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and address two significant barriers that result in many Medicare beneficiaries not receiving Medicare coverage in a skilled nursing facility - the myth that Medicare will pay for care only if a resident is "improving" and "observation" services.
