The Faces of Neglect: Behind the Closed Doors of Nursing Homes - This 2006 Consumer Voice publication tells the tragic experiences of retired homemakers, teachers, engineers, nurses and other real people who endured severe, unnecessary suffering at the most vulnerable time of their lives.

This Consumer Voice special project highlights:

• the need for a federal minimum nurse staffing standard in Medicare and Medicaid nursing homes and better staff training
• the high cost of allowing poor care (pain, suffering and premature death of residents, as well as the high financial costs of treating avoidable injuries)
• the need for states and the federal government to impose strong, swift and effective penalties when residents are neglected and abused
• the importance of preserving residents' rights and access to the civil justice system when they are hurt
