March Business Plan Working Group MeetingThe Consumer Voice's sixth and final Business Plan Working Group (BPWG) meeting was held on March 24, 2010 in Washington, DC. The purpose of this last working group meeting was to finalize the business planning deliverable schedule, discuss Consumer Voice's road show presentation, and prepare for Consumer Voice's upcoming Leadership Council and Governing Board meetings. The topics discussed included the schedule and feedback process for the final sections of the business plan draft as well as the board buddy process and the continuing of staff involvement with the Leadership Council and Governing Board. On that same note, the BPWG reviewed and discussed the agenda and presentation for the upcoming Leadership Council and Governing Board meetings to be held in April 2010. The BPWG also explored potential funding opportunities and laid out a process to effectiviely communicate the business plan's completion and implementation. As a follow up to this meeting, Root Cause will work with the BPWG to deliver a final plan by April 30, 2010. Root Cause will work with the Consumer Voice to finalize the road show presentation and to prepare for the facilitation of the Leadership Council and Governing Board meetings to be held in April. February Business Plan Working Group MeetingThe Consumer Voice’s fifth Business Plan Working Group (BPWG) meeting was held on February 23, 2010, in Washington, DC. The purpose of the fifth meeting was to continue work on the business planning process and to set out a schedule for the reviews and final deliverable of the plan. Among the topics discussed were the updates on the Need and Opportunity section of the business plan. BPWG members provided feedback to the first draft of the section, and revisions are in progress. The BPWG also set a timeline for each draft and review cycle for each section of the business plan, and defined the process for feedback. A set of Social Impact Strategies to implement the Consumer Voice’s mission was reviewed and the human resources needed to implement these strategies was also discussed. Also discussed was the Measurement section of the business plan, including performance indicators and the measurement process. As a follow up to this meeting, Root Cause will work with the BPWG to meet the schedule set out for completing the business plan sections, with the goal of delivering a final plan by April 30, 2010. January Business Planning Work Group MeetingThe Consumer Voice's fourth Business Plan Working Group (BPWG) meeting was held on January 28, 2010, in Washington, DC. The purpose of the fourth meeting was to prepare for the upcoming discussions on the Consumer Voice's governance structure at the January 29-30 Board meeting, and to move forward the business planning process. Among the topics discussed were programs and policy criteria. BPWG members received an assignment to review and will provide feedback on the criteria prior to the next meeting. Consumer Voice staff will develop a list of potential program and policy initiatives for discussion at the next BPWG meeting. Also reviewed and discussed was the outline for the Need and Opportunity section of the business plan. BPWG members received an assignment to review the draft section and provide feedback prior to BPWG 5. The group also revised the social problem, mission, and vision statements to reflect additional research and input from Board Buddy discussions. Looking to the future, the Business Plan Working Group also reviewed and brainstormed a set of strategies to aid in the implementation of the Consumer Voice's mission. Also assessed were the Consumer Voice's operating model and future activity criteria. December Business Planning Work Group MeetingThe Consumer Voice's third Business Plan Working Group (BPWG) meeting was held on December 10, 2009, in Washington, DC. The purpose of the third meeting was to continue discussions of the Consumer Voice's governance structure and to move forward the business planning process. In keeping with the topic of governance, the BPWG discussed the Consumer Voice's current governance situation as well as the types of issues that similar organizations had encountered and the solutions that they employed. Also discussed were possible governance options for the Consumer Voice and the importance of a strong line of communication with Consumer Voice's board as this process moves forward. BPWG members will contact each Board member to discuss specific governance issues and seek needed input. Board member input during the discussions will help move forward preparations needed for the January Board meeting. November Business Planning Work Group MeetingThe Consumer Voice's second Business Planning Work Group (BPWG) meeting was held in Washington, DC, on November 5, 2009. The meeting focused on refining the roles of the BPWG, brainstorming key issues and discussing action steps during the planning process. The group discussed Board member involvement and communication procedures and brainstormed key issues such as funding and program prioritization and criteria. Also discussed were the Consumer Voice's definitions of its "social problem" and "vision statement." In this case, a social problem was defined as a concise description of the social problem that Consumer Voice's members want the organization to solve. The vision statement asks the organization to envision what the world will look like many years in the future if the social issue is successfully addressed. As a follow up to this meeting, BPWG members will contact each Board member to discuss progress to-date in the business planning process and seek needed input on specific topics. The Board members' inputs will inform the planning process in subsequent BPWG meetings. Consumer Voice Holds Its First Business Planning Work Group MeetingThe first step for strategic planning was to assemble a “Business Planning Work Group” (BPWG) and Consumer Voice’S first BPWG meeting was held on October 8, 2009, in Washington, DC. The principal goals of this first meeting were to introduce the Root Cause team (the consulting firm the Consumer Voice is working with to facilitate strategic planning) and the BPWG members, to provide an overview of the business planning process and methodology, and to initiate discussions on the key issues at hand. The main topics discussed included an overview of the business planning process and how to take action alongside this business planning process. Also discussed were the key issues facing long-term care and the social impact models that can best be utilized to address these issues. As a follow up to this first meeting, Root Cause will contact each the Consumer Voice board member and other Consumer Voice members to gather input through a formal interview process.

Consumer Voice Engages George Washington University Students in Strategic Planning ProcessPatty Bennett, Erica Carter, David English, Gwen Gordon and Daniel Strong are working to complete the requirements of the graduate-level public policy and public administration program at the George Washington University by assisting Consumer Voice's strategic planning efforts. Between now and January 2010, they will provide a baseline assessment of the home and community-based care landscape and seek to answer the following questions: Who are the stakeholders in home and community-based care that the Consumer Voice may want to collaborate with? What legislation is being considered at the federal and state levels to improve quality in home and community-based care? What are the relevant trends in long-term care policy thought? |
